Top 5 Autumn Nail Varnishes

I’m sure most people agree that as the colder weather sets in and the darker evenings draw in our wardrobes adapt seamlessly; well so does my taste in nail polish colours. I just love wearing a warmer, darker colour on my nails during the autumn/winter months so in this post I will show you some of my favourite picks.

IMG_2435 (2).JPG

The first one is by No7 and this isn’t a brand I would automatically look for when shopping for nail varnish but this is such a brilliant product for the £6.00 price! I have the colour Totally Teal but I think they have renamed it because Cruising  looks exactly the same! One of the reasons I love this so much is the colour, it breaks it up from the various reds and maroon colours and lasts so well on my nails and have a beautiful texture.

The next one is by Ciate in the shade Dangerous Affair and if this isn’t an autumn colour the I don’t know what is! It’s the perfect deep burgundy/purple and as with all Ciate nail varnishes this applies really beautifully and has decent lasting power although not at good as the No7 Stay Perfect ones.

Barry M is pretty much in everyone’s and their mums nail polish collection so it’s no surprise that this one has made it into my top 5 during this season. It’s the shade Dark Side of the ‘Shroom which is absolutely stunning! The only way I can describe it is like a muddle purple but this lasts so  well on my nails and doesn’t chip horribly and crumbly like some do. This is definitely one of the ones I’ve worn the most the past few weeks.

Next up is Relentless Ruby by O.P.I and this is such a lovely ruby, berry colour that matches almost half my wardrobe right now. It adds such a lovely hint of colour to an all black outfit (which I wear quite a lot). I have a mini of this but should probably have the full size!

Lastly, is one by Avon which is so underrated because I have yet to be disappointed by any of their products! This one is in Red Velvet  and the quality of this is so good especially for the price. This deep red with a slight shimmer running through it stays on my nails so well and the shine it gives is literally the best. The only thing I would say about this is the applicator brush is quite big so does make it a little bit difficult but not the end of the world!

So that’s a round up of my top 5 nail varnishes for the autumn season. I have been loving all of these so much so far… are there any I need to try?!

My Top 5 Spring Nail Polishes

With the weather the way it’s been recently you would think that Spring has already been and that it is now Summer but alas, it is not here yet. I have been loving bright vibrant colours on my nails recently because the weather just makes you want to wear funky nail varnish! I have been wearing a lot more blue and pink colours on my nails recently other than just nude colours so below are my top 5 that I have picked out.

The first one I have been loving is the Eat my Dust Light Blue which is part of Barry M’s quick dry range. I love any quick drying nail polish because I always get bored of waiting around for them to dry or forget that then they get all smudged. I love the brush on Barry M nail varnishes and the colour of this is just perfect spring time.

Barry M Quick Dry – Eat My Dust Light Blue

As above, another one that is divine for this time of year is in the colour Freestyle. Once of the reasons that I love this colour is that it goes with so many of my work clothes and isn’t too bright so I can wear it in the week without looking too wacky!

The Rimmel 60 second shine in Let’s Get NudeAlthough this one isn’t colourful it’s such a clean, fresh shade and I like wearing this from time to time when I fancy wearing nail varnish but nothing bright.

You can’t go wrong with OPI nail polish. The colour That’s Hula-rious is something that I got in a set from a friend as a birthday gift. I hadn’t felt like wearing this colour until recently that’s because it’s a lovely pastel light green colour that just shouts Spring! I don’t have many shades like this in my nail polish collection so this is really refreshing to use sometimes.

The final one is 04 Hi Sweetie by Clinique and I got this from my boyfriends mum because it’s too bright for her. I actually love this colour but for me it’s definitely a weekend thing because it is super bright. I don’t know if it’s the shape of the bottle but it seems like there’s a lot of product. This is for sure leaning towards a more Summer colour too.

What nail colours have you been rocking recently?

Leighton Denny Miracle Mist

I received this spray in this months Glossy Box and it was probably the most exciting thing in the box to be honest, the box was so disappointing I might have to unsubscribe. Dramatic i know. Moving on I thought the concept of this spray was really interesting and I was dying to try it out straight away.

The Leighton Denny Miracle Mist is a speed drying spray for nail polish. As much as I love my nails and having them painted and looking lovely I’m one of those people who does one layer and goes to bed or something then in the morning I’m surprised that they’ve smudged. Shameful – I know. So I was actually hoping this will be the answer to all my problems!

The packaging is really nice and slick and such a nice size so you can put it in your bag or even a holiday bag. When I first saw what this did I was a bit dubious as to whether it would leave like a residue around my fingers and nails or come out as a thick powder or something but it’s actually very light. The smell of this as well is so nice I was trying not to sniff it because obviously smelling aerosols is bad for you but I couldn’t help but do it anyway! One other thing I was worried about before using this was that it only has a normal spray top so I wondered if it would kind of just go all over the place but it didn’t turn out too badly!

The instructions on this says to paint your nails as normal and apply your top coat but to leave it for a minute to set and then spray the Miracle Mist on your nails from about 20cm away.

So the little lamb I am I followed the instructions and did as I was told. Now I don’t know if I was genuinely expecting miracles or not but it didn’t really have the result I was expecting. While I found this did speed the process up I don’t feel like it really saved me any time or helped my nails along to dry more evenly but didn’t actually make them dry which is kind of what I was hoping.

Hand with no top coat

To test this out a bit more I tried using it with one hand with a top coat and the other hand without and I actually feel like it worked better on the one that didn’t have a top coat. I’m not sure if it’s because the top coat is thicker than normal varnish or what but it worked better for me without as you can see in the pictures. I mean it might be pure coincidence but the one with top coat was definitely a lot stickier! You can see from the photo below there are more smudges and dents in the polish.

Hand with no top coat

Overall, I’m not actually that impressed but this product. I don’t feel like it dried my nails any quicker than when I don’t use it. It says that you have to wait for a while anyway for the nail polish to set so for me I don’t see the point in then having to apply this spray. I don’t think I will be buying it again, I think it’s more one of those idealist products that is an amazing concept but can’t quite be brought to life.

Have you ever tried anything like this?

Obey Your Body – Natural Glow Nail Kit

Whilst away in Barcelona last week me and my boyfriend went shopping in a shopping centre in the port and as we were about to leave a rep came up to us from Obey Your Body I had never actually heard of Obey Your Body and on this particular day they were focused on nail care which is something I’m very into. After looking them up when I got home they seem to do a lot of skincare products too although I’m not sure I have the budget for most of them!!

This is definitely a pamper evening kinda kit. The kit comes in a lovely magnetic box and everything is laid out really nicely. It also wasn’t until I went onto the website that I realised they had other kits in this range too I have the Kiwi one which is really nice. As it was a special promotional offer I bought this for only €25.00 which works out as £19.47 which is less than half price!!

There are instructions on the back of the box of how to use this set as it comes with a block nail file that has three different textured files that do different things. My favourite side is the buffing file and I just love the natural shine it gives to my nails.

Above you can see my nails before I filed and buffed them and the two photos on the right show my nails after they have been buffed and the different is so amazing. I love the shine and smoothness my nails have after doing this.

I always love filing and buffing my nails followed by washing them and finally applying the hand cream. This kit comes with an extra luxury bonus of cuticle oil, you literally apply this to the edges of your nails and let it soak in for a couple of minutes. After you have done all this you can either leave your nails or paint them.

I have enjoyed adding this into my pamper routine because it’s another way to relax and just really give some time to yourself.

Let me know if you’ve ever tried any of the Obey Your Body skincare, is it worth the money?

Yay or Nay – Matte Nail Varnish?

One a lazy Sunday scrolling through Pinterest I found myself looking through pages and pages of nail art and various colours when I came across quite a few pictures of matte nails. It’s not for everyone I know but it just looks SO good! Admittedly I’m not one for salons and nail bars so I decided to hunt down some matte nail varnish online which is where I found it on the Ciatè website.

I was so excited when this beauty arrived. It comes in such a cute dinky box and I couldn’t wait to use it. The first time I used this I had just received a Birchbox with another Ciatè polish mini in the colour Pool Party which if I’m honest isn’t usually a colour I would go for just as it’s a tad too bright for me but I decided I might like it better with a matte top coat on…. and boy, did I!

WP_20160207_11_38_36_Pro (2)

I put the base colour on first, waited for it to dry properly and then applied the matte top coat as you normally would. When I first put it on I noticed it dried super quickly and as it was drying stripes started to form across my nail which I was a bit surprised at but on the next couple of nails I made sure there was an extra amount of the top coat on the brush and it applied really well and very smoothly.

WP_20160109_12_26_31_Pro (2)

I was so pleased with the finish… until it started chipping about 2 hours after I had only just done my nails. This I wasn’t as pleased about. I think that because it is so drying in order to have the matte texture it makes it more susceptible to chipping which is a bit disappointing, however, I feel like this would be brilliant to use for a night out or one off occasion as I just love the look and feel so much.

Have you found any other matte nail varnishes that I could try?

Hand Care Vs Hand Scare

Looking after your hands might seem like a really simple task, however, it always gets to the end of the week before I realise I haven’t even moisturised my hands. The skin on your hands is always exposed and easily becomes subject to dry, scaly, repulsive skin. Apparently this kind of misfortune is hereditary as my mum is the worst for this and she has actually drawn blood with her dry skin before! YUK

Since the beginning of the year I have made it my mission to take better care of my hands and nails. It has been a lot easier than I expected mainly because I have been more conscious of having nice, soft skin on my hands. I have been keeping an Avon hand cream in my bag so that I always have one on the go and I have also made an effort to keep one in my office at work which is actually quite nice to put on during the day.

wp_ss_20160205_0006 (2)

I only ever put hand cream on after I have just washed my hands, only because I cannot think of anything worse than spreading germs around my hands and touching my keyboard or my phone or something that could be laden with germs.

At the weekend I have a mini hand pamper session which involves washing my hands, using my favourite hand cream and afterwards I take this chance to gently push back my cuticles then paint my nails. Recently I have been loving Ciatè’s Pillow Fight nail varnish and I think it’s the most perfect winter colour.

wp_ss_20160205_0007 (3)

The instructions on Ciatè’s nail polish says to wash hands before applying to remove all grease and although I do this, I also moisturise with hand cream so that adds grease again. I always apply two coats and depending on how long I want to wear the polish for I put a clear top coat on too. I have found with this that it literally lasts forever if you want it to. The other day when I was in a rush I painted them and completely forgot to put a top coat on and they didn’t chip at all for almost five days which I think is pretty impressive.

What hand and nail care do you do?

A- x
